UI GreenMetric Ranking 2017 : University of Wageningen, Netherland – The World’s Best Green Campus

Universitas Indonesia (UI) released the result of UI GreenMetric World University Rankings 2017 on December 11th, 2017. The rankings were announced at the Makara Art Centrum Building of UI by the Universitas Indonesia’s Rector, Prof. Muhammad Anis and the Chairperson of UI GreenMetric, Prof. Riri Fitri Sari. The ceremony was also opened by the representative of the representative of The Ministry of Environment and Forestry, Republic of Indonesia and also Directorate General of Strengthening for Research and Development of The Ministry of Research and Higher Education of Republic of Indonesia, Dr. Muhammad Dimyati.

This year 619 universities in 76 countries participate, compared to last year 515 universities in 75 countries. It is the first and only university rankings in the world that measure each participating university’s commitment in developing an ‘environmentally friendly’ infrastructure. The rankings look at 6 indicators of each university (setting and infrastructure, energy and climate change, waste, water, transportation and education). University of Wageningen with the total score of 7,552.00 became the world’s best green campuses, followed by the University of Nottingham (total score 7,464.00) and the third-ranked is the University of California, Davis (total score 7,365.00). Moreover, the most green campus in Indonesia in the list is Universitas Indonesia with the total score of 6,519.00 and ranked 23th in the world. University Of Bradford, Nottingham Trent University, University Of Oxford, University Of Connecticut, Bangor University, University College Cork, Hochschule Trier – Umwelt-Campus Birkenfeld are on the top 10 of the rank.

This year UI GreenMetric initiated a network hub for participating universities to share their best practices in implementing sustainable campus programs in their universities and collaborating together in three thematic priorities (Shaping Global Higher Education and Research in Sustainability; Creating Global Sustainability Leaders; and Partnering on Solutions to Sustainability Challenges). To date 1 international workshop, and 9 national workshops in 9 countries have been held in collaboration with host universities. Currently, the network has 18 national coordinators in Asia, Europe and Australia. They will coordinate other universities in their countries to participate in UI GreenMetric and collaborate in the network. The next international workshop will be conducted in Diponegoro University, Semarang, Indonesia on 8-10 April 2018.
